A body-protected (Type B) patient area is one where the patient may be in contact with electrical equipment during treatment. The electrical installation must meet specific insulation and earthing requirements to prevent harm from stray current.
A cardiac-protected (Type CF) area has the most stringent electrical safety requirements — used in operating theatres, cardiac catheterisation labs and similar environments where direct cardiac contact is possible. Even micro-level current leakage can be life-threatening in these areas.
All tests include electrical earthing, RCD and/or Line Isolation Monitor (LIM) testing, socket outlets, area markings, classification of areas and signage. For cardiac-protected areas, testing covers the full equipotential earthing system and all LIMs to confirm they are operating within specification.
Routine testing must be carried out at intervals not exceeding 12 months, as required by AS/NZS 3003:2018. Testing is also required at commissioning of new areas and after any electrical work or renovation.
