Patient Treatment Area Testing

Electrical testing and commissioning of body- and cardiac-protected treatment areas to AS3003 — required for hospital theatres, cardiac wards and any area where patient safety
depends on electrical integrity.

Electrical Safety Where It Matters Most.

Patient treatment, theatre and ward electrical environments are among the most safety-critical in any healthcare facility. AS3003:2018 sets strict requirements for the electrical installation of body-protected and cardiac-protected areas — and those requirements must be met at commissioning and verified
through annual testing.

U-Tech Medical performs AS3003 testing and commissioning for patient treatment areas in hospitals, day surgeries and specialist facilities across Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane. We test new facilities before they open, re-test after renovation or electrical work, and provide the documentation required for accreditation. We can also consult directly with your electrical contractors to help achieve compliance during construction or rectification works.

What's Included in Your Service:

Body-Protected Area Testing

Annual electrical safety testing of body-protected patient areas (Type B) including earthing, RCDs, sockets, markings, and signage.

Cardiac-Protected Area Testing

Stringent testing of cardiac-protected areas (Type CF), including LIMs, earthing, and operating theatres, tested to AS/NZS 3003:2018.

Commissioning & Post-Renovation Testing

Full AS/NZS 3003:2018 commissioning of new or refurbished treatment areas, plus re-testing after electrical work or renovations.

Electrical Contractor Consultation

Advice and consultation on area classification, earthing, commissioning, and electrical alterations for compliance with AS/NZS 3003:2018.

RCD & LIM Condition Advisory

Formal compliance certificate issued on completion of the testing program, suitable for accreditation submission.

Compliance Reports

Detailed test report issued after each inspection, highlighting issues and supporting accreditation submission.

How it Works:

Step 1: Scope of Testing

We confirm which areas require testing, the area classification, and schedule the visit to minimise clinical disruption.

Step 2: On-site Testing

Our technician performs all AS3003 electrical tests, recording results for every outlet, fitting, and connection

Step 3: Documentation

Report and compliance certificate are issued, highlighting non-compliant findings and corrective actions.

Common Questions from Medical Facilities

A body-protected (Type B) patient area is one where the patient may be in contact with electrical equipment during treatment. The electrical installation must meet specific insulation and earthing requirements to prevent harm from stray current.

A cardiac-protected (Type CF) area has the most stringent electrical safety requirements — used in operating theatres, cardiac catheterisation labs and similar environments where direct cardiac contact is possible. Even micro-level current leakage can be life-threatening in these areas.

All tests include electrical earthing, RCD and/or Line Isolation Monitor (LIM) testing, socket outlets, area markings, classification of areas and signage. For cardiac-protected areas, testing covers the full equipotential earthing system and all LIMs to confirm they are operating within specification.

Routine testing must be carried out at intervals not exceeding 12 months, as required by AS/NZS 3003:2018. Testing is also required at commissioning of new areas and after any electrical work or renovation.

Yes. U-Tech can consult directly with your electrical contractors and hospital engineers before, during and after works — helping to ensure new installations or rectifications are planned and executed to comply with AS3003. We can also advise on what items need to be modified, repaired or replaced to achieve compliance.

We plan all testing around your facility’s schedule. Many tests can be carried out during off-peak hours or over a weekend to avoid disruption to clinical operations.
